LITTLE MISS HOLLYWOOD - By Rex W. Clark, Oct 27, 2007
(Dedicated to Shirley Temple Black)

Chapter 1 - Saving the Nation

The year was 2008, the country was in the middle of a severe slump in the housing market, foreclosures at an all time high, the very unpopular war in Iraq, and record high gas prices had taken it’s toll on the nations economy which in turn had spawned a feeling of uncertainty much like that of the great depression of the 30’s. Mark Baker of Dreamland productions wanted to lift the people’s spirits like Shirley Temple did back then and several generations since.

Mark now finishing a week of auditioning hundreds of little girls from all over the country without finding the little girl with just the right stuff. Mark assistant, David Baxter came into the sound studio and said, “Mark you’ve been looking for two months and have turned down some girls with some real talent, certainly any one of those could be our next child star.” Mark saying while tossing pages of names of little girls who had auditioned on to his desk, “Not just anyone of them will work I want a little girl who’ll melt even the hardest of hearts like Shirley Temple did with her charm, singing, and dancing!” David picking up the papers that Mark had just thrown on his desk while saying, ‘There’s over 300 names here if you haven’t found her yet you may never find her if she even exists!” Mark getting red in the face with determination said “She’s out there I just haven’t found her yet I’ll keep on looking no matter how long it takes!” David looked at the calendar on the wall as he said “Thomas Randall has given us two more weeks to find that certain little girl with the right stuff or he’ll pull the plug!” Mark looked at the clock as he said in an air of frustration, “Its Friday I’m going camping this weekend to clear my mind and hit it again Monday morning.” David suggested, “A little rest and relaxation might not be a bad idea for all of us here for a couple of days I’ll see You Monday.” At that Mark removed his jacket from off the back of his chair and left the office.

Chapter 2 - A Much Needed break

Early the following morning Mark had arrived at his campground in the mountains and after pitching his tent and setting up his camp site went for a hike. After hiking for over an hour he heard a child from a distance calling out, “Help is there anyone out there help I’m lost please help me.” Mark picked up the pace while calling back to the child, “I’ll be right there don’t go away.” When he finally got to where she was he found her tired, dirty, hungry, and alone. Mark asked, “Are you ok?” The little girl replied “I was camping with my mom when I saw a little rabbit and chased it into the woods.” Mark asked her “How long have you been lost?” The little girl replied, “Oh I’m not lost it’s my mom who’s lost.” Mark chuckled then asked, “What’s your name?” The little girl replied; “Rebecca Boles.” Rebecca looked him up and down then asked, “What’s yours?” Mark replied “I’m Mark Baker.” With much appreciation Rebecca asked “I’m glad you found me could you help me find my mother?” Mark eager to help replied, “There’s a ranger station not too far from my campground I’ll take you there.” Rebecca’s voice was filled with thankful relief as she thanked him. She then commented as her stomach growled, “I haven’t eaten anything all day?” Mark said as he was digging into his backpack “I have something here.” He gave her several bite sized pieces of jerky, trail mix and a small bottle of water to chase it down with.

Chapter 3 - At the Camp

Later after they had reached Mark’s camp he removed his cell phone from his duffel bag then turned around as he said, “I don’t have a signal I think there’s a phone at the ranger station I’m sure your mother has called them and I’m certain they’re looking for you now.” Rebecca took a bite of jerky then said, “I thought I was the one who had gotten lost but then I realized that it was my mom who was the one who was lost.” Mark smiled as he said, “I seem to remember a similar experience when I was a child.” Rebecca took a sip of water then curiously asked, “What happened?” Mark chuckled then replied, “One time when I was five my mother and I were at a department store during the Christmas season when we passed the toy section where a man dressed in a Santa’s suit was entertaining children.” Rebecca interrupted,” Did you get to sit on Santa’s knee and tell him what you wanted for Christmas?” Mark motioned with his hand as he continued, “I’ll get to that, well I saw this other boy with this neat toy so I asked him where they were, so the boy took me to where he found it.” Rebecca again interrupted, “So did you get to play with the toy?” Mark smiled then continued, “The boy and I played with several toys for what seemed for just a few minutes when my mother grabbed me by the hand and scolded me for getting lost.” Rebecca gasped, “Was your mother very mad?” Mark laughed then replied, “I told my mother that I knew exactly where I was that she was the one who was lost.”

Chapter 4 - The Hike

At that Mark and Rebecca started for the Ranger station. Then after they had walked for a while Rebecca asked, “What kind of work do you do?” Mark replied, “I’m a movie producer for dreamland productions.” Rebecca’s voice was filled with excitement as she asked, “You make movies like at the theatres?” Mark chuckled as he replied, “Yes just like at the theatres.” Rebecca smiled as she commented; “I would love to be in the movies some day.” Mark commented, “I’m looking for a little girl with the right stuff to be the next Shirley Temple but I haven’t found her yet.” Rebecca cheerfully commented, “My dance and acting teacher said that she could teach me to act and dance just like her and then last week my teacher told my mom that I’m the best in my class.” Mark smiled as he said; “Well then we’ll have to audition you at the studio.” Rebecca’s voice was filled with excitement as she asked, “For real that would be wonderful when can I come to audition?” Mark replied “We’ll discuss that with your parents.”

Rebecca looked down as she sadly commented, “My father died in Iraq, he was in the Marines.” Mark apologetically said, “Oh I’m so sorry.” And then asked “How old are you?” Rebecca replied, “I’m eight years old.” Mark commented, “You’re just the age that I’m looking for.” Rebecca with more excitement asked, “What if you like me?” Mark turned his head slightly to the side as he commented, “I like you already but if you’re what I’m looking for then you could very well be the next big child star.” Rebecca gasped then said “Wow imagine me the next Shirley Temple” Mark laughed as he said, “We’ll not know until you audition.” Mark then pointed as he said, “Look there’s the ranger station we’ll ask them about your mother!” Rebecca leaped as she said, “Oh goody, goody we’re finally here!”

Chapter 5 - The Ranger Station

Mark and Rebecca were at the Ranger station explaining how Rebecca’s mom had gotten lost while camping. The park ranger asked Rebecca as he picked up a pen and reached into his desk retrieving a piece of paper, “What’s your name sweetie pie?” Rebecca replied as she walked to the other side of the ranger station, “Rebecca Boles.” The Park Ranger asked as he began writing down the information, “How old are you?” She skipped across the room to where an interesting looking box of toys were sitting next to a table as she replied, “I’m eight years old.” The Park Ranger asked as he continued writing, “What are your parents’ names?” Rebecca replied as she picked up a rag doll and moved its arms and legs, “My mother’s name is Sharon my father died while in Iraq, he was in the Marines.” The Park Ranger apologetically said, “Oh I’m so sorry I’ll check with the other ranger stations to see if your mother has checked in with them.” Rebecca continued to play with the doll as the park ranger picked up the radio mike and spoke into it. “This is station 297, have any of the other stations inquired about a lost child?” One of the other Ranger stations on the other side of the park radioed back, “A lady came in a couple of hours ago and reported that her little girl wearing a blue short sleeved shirt and blue jeans had wandered away from their camp site.” The park ranger radioed back, “Tell her mother she’s here and that we’ll take her there shortly.” The ranger on the other end radioed back, “Roger that, see you when you get here, over and out.” The park ranger said as he put the radio mike down. “I’ll take the two of you to meet your mother.” Rebecca looked at the doll then at the ranger who smiled as he said, “Go ahead and keep her she needs a loving home.” Rebecca began stuffing the doll into her backpack as she cheerfully said, “I promise to take very good care of her.” The ranger again smiled as he commented, “I had a feeling you would.”

After Mark, Rebecca, and the park ranger had arrived at the other Ranger station, Rebecca’s mother hugged her while saying to her, “I’ve been worried sick about you how did you get lost.” Rebecca replied, “Oh I wasn’t lost I chased a rabbit into the woods and when I turned around you were gone so I figured you had gotten lost.” She went to say, “I’m so glad they found you.” The park ranger leaned close to Sharon as he softly said, “Mr. Baker found your daughter on a hiking trail several miles from here.” Sharon turned to Mark as she said “Thank you for bringing my daughter back safely.” Mark said “You would do the same for me, by the way I’m a producer for dreamland productions and your daughter tells me that she has dancing and acting training.” Sharon replied, “She wants to be like Shirley Temple.” Mark explained, “I’m looking for a little girl with the right stuff to be the next big child star why don’t you bring Rebecca by the studio Monday to audition.” Sharon asked, “What role would Rebecca be auditioning for?” Mark replied, “We have several movies to be made over the next few years all featuring an adorable girl who would melt even the hardest of hearts with her charm, singing and dancing.” Sharon chuckled as she commented “I couldn’t keep Rebecca away, tell us what time to be there.” Mark handed Sharon his business card from his wallet as he was saying “Be there at 9:30 the address and phone number are on the card if you need to reschedule call me.” Sharon suggested, “Rebecca and I would be honored if you would spend the rest of the weekend with us at our camp.” Mark cheerfully accepted “Great I’ll ask the ranger to give me a ride to my camp site to gather my things.”

Chapter 6 - A Change of Address

So at that they all went and moved Marks camping gear to Sharon’s, and Rebecca’s camp, where they helped to erect Mark’s tent then the three of them spent the rest of the weekend singing campfire songs roasting hot dogs and marsh mellows. Then Sunday night they all broke camp and headed for home with the assurance that they would meet up again the following morning . The next morning Rebecca woke up three hours before her audition to practice her tap dancing routine when Sharon came into Rebecca’s bedroom, and cheerfully commented, “You’re full of energy this morning.” Rebecca answered, “I can hardly wait for my audition, come on let’s go!” Sharon laughed then asked, “What’s your hurry the studio is only ten miles away and we have three hours before you audition!” Rebecca answered, “I don’t want to be late.” Sharon suggested, “Let’s eat breakfast, get dressed, then fix your hair and makeup before you go bursting into Mr. Baker’s office and sweep him off his feet.” Rebecca impatiently commented, “Oh mother must I always be the one who’s in a hurry.” Sharon laughed then gently pinched Rebecca’s nose as she lovingly asked, “What am I going to do with you?”

Chapter 7 - The Audition

Later upon arrival to the sound stage Mr. Baker met them as he cheerfully asked, “Well young lady are you ready to strut your stuff?” Rebecca rocked on her heels as she replied, “You bet!” Mr. Baker laughed then said to a choreographer hired by the studio, “Take it slow then get more complex to see if she can keep up.” The choreographer named Daniel Hays, (had several years experience on Broadway before opening his own dance studio in Los Angeles where he turned out some of the best tap dancers in the world), smiled as he looked down at Rebecca as he asked, “Well young lady let’s see what you can do.” He began to lead Rebecca through some simple steps as she followed along. He then tapped out more complex steps as Rebecca easily followed. Daniel then smiled as he said, “Let’s see if you can really keep up with me now.” Rebecca had a dimpled smile with a sound of mischief in her voice as she challenged him, “I bet I can beat you.” Daniel chuckled as he accepted her challenge, “Your on I’ll lead out.” Rebecca smiled as she teased, “Don’t hurt yourself.” Daniel laughed then led out with a somewhat easy routine of which she following without any difficulty. After a short while she teased, “Is that all you’ve got?” Daniel was now somewhat impressed as he led out with an even more difficult routine again with Rebecca easily following along. Daniel then motioned for Rebecca to lead out. She smiled then teased, “Perhaps you should consider taking a breather old man,” then led out with a very difficult routine for her age. Daniel smiled as he said, “You’re pretty good.” And then led out with a very energetic routine again with Rebecca following without any difficulty. Rebecca held her hand in front of her mouth while pretending to yawn as she said, “Wake me up when we’re done.” Then with mischief in his voice Daniel said “Bet you can’t do this,” then did a back flip landing on both feet then triumphantly grinned as Rebecca stopped dancing and put her hands on hips as she vented, “That’s not fair you cheated.” Daniel laughed as he asked, “Can you sing as good as you dance?” Rebecca answered, “You bet!” Daniel then said as he put a tape into a boom box and pushed the play button. “I’m sure you know this song let’s hear you sing it.”

Rebecca totally captivated him with her vocal talent. Then after the song he proudly commented, “I think we’ve found our next big child star.” Rebecca gasped and smiled as she asked, “For real?” Mark smiled as he replied, “Yes My dear you’ve got the right stuff.” Mark then said to Sharon, “Let’s go into my office, and talk about when Rebecca can get started but first there’s some details we need to work out.” He then told Daniel to occupy Rebecca while he and Sharon talked business
